Free entry equilibria with positive profits: A unified approach to quantity and price competition games

چکیده
Free entry equilibria are usually characterized by the zero profit condition. We plead instead for a strict application of the Nash equilibrium concept to a symmetric simultaneous game played by actual and potential entrants, producing under decreasing average cost. Equilibrium is then typically indeterminate, with a number of active firms varying between an upper bound imposed by profitability and a lower bound required by sustainability. We use a canonical model with strategies represented by prices, although covering standard regimes of quantity and price competition, to show that in equilibrium the critical (profit maximizing) price must lie between the break-even and the limit prices.

Platform Competition, Compatibility, and Social Efficiency∗
We study competitive interaction between two platform providers (such as two suppliers of videogame consoles or operating systems) that mediate between sellers of platform-based products (developers of games or applications) and buyers of such products (users of games or applications). Users and developers first trade with one of the platforms (users purchase videogame consoles and developers s...
متن کاملImproved Profitability and Competition in Two Level Supply Chain by Non-Cooperative Games
This article by modeling a non-cooperative dynamic game tries to improve profitability and competition. This paper has considered how the manufacturer interacts with multiple competitor distributors. Each distributor also determines the optimal distribution price and inventory replenishment policies to maximize their profits. The issue form a non-cooperative dynamic game. Distributors formulate...
متن کاملComparing Cournot and Bertrand Equilibria in a Differentiated Duopoly with Product R&D
This paper compares Bertrand and Cournot equilibria in a differentiated duopoly with substitute goods and product R&D. I find that R&D expenditure, prices and firms’ net profits are always higher under quantity competition than under price competition. Furthermore, output, consumer surplus and total welfare are higher in the Bertrand equilibrium than in the Cournot equilibrium if either R&D spi...
متن کاملHorizontal mergers with free entry
We consider the impact of horizontal mergers in the presence of free entry and exit. In contrast to much of the previous literature on horizontal mergers, our model yields predictions that seem intuitively reasonable: with only moderate cost synergies mergers of a small number of industry participants are beneficial (even under quantity competition), there is no “free rider problem” in that ins...
متن کاملMarket Structure in Congestible Markets
This paper analyses market structure of industries that are subject to both positive and negative network effects. The size of a firm determines the quality of its product: when network effects are positive, a larger firm is of higher quality; when the effects are negative, a larger firm’s product is of lower quality. Consumers have heterogenous preferences towards quality (firm size), and firm...
